Saxophonist Nick Mazzarella formed Meridian Trio in 2014 to explore the intersection of modern jazz with the American avant-garde and develop a repertoire of original material. His compositions for the trio integrate elements of the blues and modalism with free improvisation, and often employ memorable melodic phrases, as well as swinging grooves and other cyclical rhythmic structures. The group’s debut album, Triangulum, was released by noted Portuguese new music label Clean Feed Records in May 2017.
