Since its formation in 2014, alto saxophonist Nick Mazzarella’s quintet has served as one of the primary vehicles for his work as a bandleader and composer. The group’s extensive original repertoire juxtaposes and integrates stylistically diverse material, exploring in particular the intersection of soul jazz and blues with the avant-garde. The ensemble has maintained a regular presence in Chicago’s rich jazz and improvised music scene for nearly a decade, and has appeared at many of the city’s leading venues including the Green Mill and Constellation, as well as at the Hyde Park Jazz Festival and the Chicago Jazz Festival.
